Dave dropped by Apex Electronics in Sun Valley just outside LA, the biggest and oldest surplus electronics store in California (and probably the US?) . Come on a tour through the aladdin’s cave of surplus electronics and hardware. It’s actually pretty sad to see all this old technology just lying on the scrap heap 🙁

If you would like to see more photos of this antenna that show it under construction, as well as the antenna mounted on my mobile, check out my ham radio gallery link below. Prototype 10/80 meter multiband antenna by VE6AB – Here is a look at the antenna assembly that I just finished fabricating in my shop with the following specifications. The coil form measures 4″OD X 9″ The coil-form is machined from Lexan (polycarbonate) The end-caps are machined from Delrin® (acetal homopolymer) The wire on the coil is 14 gauge tinned buss wire The mast as well as the coil fittings are machined from 304 stainless-steel The TuneSleeve assembly is a build-up from 16 gage 6061-T6 aluminum The TS has a silver-plated beryllium copper fingerstock contactor riveted (360 degrees) to the top of the TS assembly, compressed and held firmly against the coil with 35 psi. This makes the antenna capable of handling a 500 watt amplifier and more. The photos show the coil positioned in the 80 meter (3700mhz) band. Run the TS to the top of the coil and your tuned for the 17 meter band. The antenna will tune the 10 meter band with the caphat removed from the whip. The linear actuator that is mounted on this multiband antenna and is attached to the TuneSleeve works extremely well. This style of actuator is ideally suited for this application, as the TuneSleeve requires a smooth linear operation with positional control. The other plus to this actuator is the fact that it has built in limit switches. The …

storyofelectronics.org —- The Story of Electronics, releasing Tuesday, November 9, employs the Story of Stuff style to explore the high-tech revolution’s collateral damage—6 billion tons of e-waste and counting, poisoned workers and a public left holding the bill. Host Annie Leonard takes viewers from the mines and factories where our gadgets begin to the horrific backyard recycling shops in China where many end up. The film concludes with a call for a green ‘race to the top’ where designers compete to make long-lasting, toxic-free products that are fully and easily recyclable. Our production partner on the electronics film is the Electronics TakeBack Coalition, which promotes green design and responsible recycling in the electronics industry.groups
